F. Gary Gray in talks to direct N.W.A. biopic

N.W.A biopic

“The script to me is about 75% there. We’re waiting to hire a director and then bring it on home,” Cube said.

Cube also noted that although progress was being made, the film still wasn’t a sure thing.

“Until they greenlight the picture, start cuttin’ checks, it’s still just a dream,” he said.

Written by Andrea Berloff, Straight Outta Compton will tell the story of controversial southern California rap crew N.W.A., who rose from the crime-riddled streets of South Central Los Angeles and snatched the attention of everyone from the man on the street to the Federal Bureau of Investigation before being torn apart by greed and deception. At its peak, the crew consisted of Cube, founder Eazy-E, MC Ren, producer Dr. Dre and DJ Yella.

The film will be produced by Cube Vision along with Eazy-E’s widow Tomica Wright.

Gray previously worked with Cube on Friday, the MC’s first foray into screenwriting. His directorial career spans more than 20 years and features credits including 1996′s Set It Off starring Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett; 1998′sThe Negotiator starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey; and 2001′sThe Italian Job starring Mark Wahlbergand featuring the artist then-known as Mos Def. He has also helmed several music videos, including Cube’s “It Was A Good Day,” TLC‘s “Waterfalls” and, most recently, Rick Ross‘ “Super High.”
